The government's Planning and Infrastructure Bill is a welcome move towards tackling some of the biggest challenges in the construction and housing sectors, and our Head of Operations, Richard Bull has this to say in reponse:
"At Ecosafe Group, we know first-hand how slow planning processes and infrastructure delays can hold up essential work. This bill promises to streamline approvals, speed up infrastructure projects, and support housing development; all of which are much needed.
One of the most important aspects of the bill is the focus on delivering 1.5 million homes this parliamentary term. As a company working in property maintenance, damp and mould remediation, and retrofitting, we see the real impact of the UK’s housing shortage. Faster planning processes should mean quicker delivery of safe, high-quality homes, but only if local authorities have the resources to implement these changes effectively.
Another key point is the shift to a “first ready, first connected” system for clean energy projects. This could be a game changer for renewable energy in the UK, making it easier to connect new solar and heat pump projects to the National Grid, which aligns with our work in decarbonisation and energy efficiency.
While there’s a lot to be positive about, the success of these reforms depends on proper funding for local planning departments. Without the right resources, faster processes could just mean more pressure on already stretched councils, slowing things down rather than speeding them up.
